When you sign up to Vonage, you are set-up with a new Vonage telephone number. Vonage enables you to pick a local dialling code of your choice regardless of your actual location. This is particularly useful for businesses or anyone who wants to appear local to customers and friends or family but are in fact elsewhere within the country or even in another country! Likewise, people calling you will only pay a local call rate even if you receive a call when you're outside of your chosen dialling code area!
When you sign up to Vonage online, your phone number will be confirmed on the confirmation page of the online order journey.
When you sign up, you'll need a Vonage product such as a Vonage modem or Vonage router. This product will connect your existing touch tone phone to your existing broadband connection. How does Vonage work?
Vonage phone calls are made over your existing broadband connection and not through your regular phone line (or network) like most traditional phone companies such as BT and Virgin.
Vonage uses a technology called VoIP, (which means Voice over Internet Protocol). It's also referred to as Voice over Broadband, Internet Phone, Internet Telephony, Broadband Telephony, Broadband Phone and even Digital Phone Service. However don't worry if you don't understand the technology involved, all you need to know is that it works and it's really easy to set up.
What do I speak into?
Vonage works like a regular phone service; you speak into your existing touch tone phone and make calls to other landline and mobile numbers anywhere around the world.
Do I get a new telephone number when I join Vonage?
Yes, Vonage provide you with a new telephone number.
Can I select the dialling code of my choice when I switch to Vonage?
Yes, Vonage allows you to select the dialling code of your choice regardless of which area code you actually live in. This way you can appear to be local when you make & receive calls even if your not.
Can I keep my existing telephone number?
Yes. It will take a minimum of 20 working days to transfer your old number over to Vonage. Until then, you can make and receive calls using the Vonage telephone number you are provided with when you signed up. Once your number has moved over to Vonage, your existing telephone number will permanently replace your original Vonage telephone number. This transfer process is also referred to as 'porting'.
What equipment do I need?
When you sign up to Vonage, you will need either a Vonage router or Vonage phone adapter. This router / adapter will connect your touch tone phone to your existing broadband connection. The Vonage product you need is dependant on your existing broadband modem / router set up. Go to our Equipment Chooser for assistance if you are unsure what product you need.
What do I need to do when I sign up to Vonage?

Does everyone I call need to be connected to a broadband connection?
No, only you as a Vonage customer need a broadband connection to make and receive phone calls. You can make calls to any landline and mobile in the world.
Does everyone I call need to be signed up with Vonage also?
No, it does not matter whether the person you are calling is a Vonage user or not. If you do call someone who is also signed up to Vonage, your calls to them are always free regardless of your actual geographical locations.
Do I have to change my existing broadband or ISP provider?
No. Vonage works over any broadband connection, whether Cable or ADSL broadband.
Does my computer need to be switched on to make or receive phone calls?
No. Your touch tone phone plugs into your Vonage box which connects with your existing broadband router or modem. Then you're ready to make calls regardless of whether your PC is switched on or not.
Can I use my computer when I talk on the phone?
Yes. You can surf the internet and make or receive calls with Vonage at the same time.
Is Vonage PC to PC?
No, Vonage works exactly like a regular telephone line - you make calls from your home phone, through a broadband connection, to other landlines or mobiles; 'Phone to Phone'.

What are Vonage to Vonage calls?
Vonage to Vonage calls, regardless of your actual geographical location are completely free. So if you are in Italy and your Vonage friend is in India, calls between you would be absolutely free.
